Granddaughter arrested on extortion charges

On Wednesday at approximately 12:30 a.m., Lafayette police responded to the 100 block of Laura Street regarding an incident involving extortion. The victim, a 65-year-old female of Lafayette, received multiple calls from an unknown person regarding the safety of her 19-year-old granddaughter. The suspect demanded that the victim turn over $1,500 or her granddaughter would be harmed. According to the victim, the granddaughter did reside at the residence and had not been seen for at least 12 hours. During the course of the investigation the granddaughter was located and it was discovered that the extortion was an elaborate attempted to aquire money from the grandmother. Officers arrested the victim’s granddaughter, 19-year-old Jalessa Dixon of Lafayette and charged her with extortion. The suspect who made the threatening phone calls was not located, but the case remains under investigation.
