Lafayette High School Teacher Bonds Out of Jail
UPDATED -- Lafayette High School dance teacher, Katie Champagne, accused of fondling her female students is facing six counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile.
This is the result of nearly a month of investigation.
A student complained that Champagne touched her breast and rear end.
Lafayette police said several other students came forward with similar information.
"What happened with the video is that the classrooms are wired with cameras for surveillance not only for the protection of the students but the protection of the teachers as well. And so our investigators went and were able to obtain the video from the classroom. And based off the video they were able to confirm allegations that were made by the student against the teacher," explained Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police Department.
The Lafayette Parish School System said Champagne is on unpaid leave until she is either cleared or convicted on the charges she is facing.
Original Story -- On November 15, 2011, Lafayette Police received a complaint from a 14 year old juvenile regarding interaction she had with a teacher at Lafayette High School. The allegations indicated that the teacher had grabbed the breast and slapped the buttocks of the victim. The actions are believed to have occurred from September of 2011 through November of 2011.
Investigators with the Lafayette Police Department’s Youth Service Section began investigating the allegations. Six victims under the age of 17 were identified and provided statements to police that the suspect had engaged in inappropriate touching of the students. Investigators also viewed video footage from the class room where the activity was alleged to have occurred. On several instances on the footage, inappropriate touching occurred between the suspect and the students.
On December 5, 2011, at approximately 3:00 pm, investigators arrested Katie Champagne (30) of Lafayette and charged her with 6 counts of Indecent Behavior with a Juvenile. The case remains under investigation.
