Armed robbery of victim’s cell phone turns into overnight police standoff

BRPD was forced to send in its SWAT team over night after an armed robbery suspect was located, but refused to evacuate his home.

Officials say the incident started at around midnight on Wednesday, July 18. Officers were dispatched to the 4900 block of Airline Hwy. to a reported armed robbery.

We’re told two male suspects approached the victim and asked to use his cell phone. The victim complied, but when he asked for it back, one suspect pulled out a gun. The two suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle with the stolen property.

Officers quickly located the first suspect in the area and placed him into custody without incident. Shortly thereafter they located the vehicle for the second suspect parked outside of a home on Embroke at 79th Street.

Officers spoke to a female occupant of the home who originally told police no one else was located inside of the home. However, she then told police that the suspect was in the home.

BRPD’s SWAT team was then called to the scene because the suspect would not leave the home and was reported to have a gun in his possession. Nearby neighbors were asked to vacate their home while police attempted to negotiate with the suspect.

Less than two hours later, the suspect exited the home and was taken into custody without further incident.

Both suspects are in custody and are being questioned by police at this time. They are both facing charges for Armed Robbery.
