The State Department of Agriculture and Forestry says they're seeing a large jump in the number of horses infected with West Nile virus.

This comes after DHH warned everyone in the state about the higher than usual number of mosquitos infected with the disease.

The mosquito-transmitted diseases can lead inflammation or swelling of the brain and spinal cord.

So far this year, the Office of Veterinary Health says eight horses with been infected with West Nile.

Officials both in Ascension and EBR Parishes are urging everyone to take precautions when they're outside
