A mother is behind bars for allegedly stabbing her son’s girlfriend to death while the victim’s two children were sleeping in the other room. We’re told the suspect was found standing over the injured woman, yelling at her.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident occurred just after midnight on Sunday, July 15. When responding deputies arrived at the home on Brookter Street, they found the victim’s boyfriend outside and his mother, Joan Faye Hartman, 54, was inside standing by the victim, who was lying on the floor. Deputies say Hartman was yelling at the victim.

We’re told the victim suffered from multiple stab wounds and was transported to the Ochsner Northshore hospital for treatment. However, she later died as a result of those injuries.

Officials say the victim and her boyfriend were living at the residence with Hartman and her husband. The victim had two children, who were found sleeping in another room of the home.

Hartman was arrested and questioned by deputies. She allegedly confessed to stabbing the victim. Officials have not released the reason she provided to explain how the attack began. A press conference has been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 16 to release further information.
Hartman remains in the St. Tammany Parish Jail without bond. Second degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence at hard labor without parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
