Tonight a thirty three year old is facing several charges including murder in the disappearance of twenty two year old UL Lafayette student Mickey Shunick.
Thirty three year old Brandon Laverne of Church Point has been assigned a public defender and is refusing to cooperate with investigators.
While Shunick hasn't been found yet Laverne's aggravated kidnapping charge according to police also constitutes a first degree murder charge.
Laverne was arrested after his white pickup truck was placed at both the last place Shunick was seen riding her bike on May nineteenth and where that bike was eventually found underneath I 10's Whiskey Bay exit.
Investigators say that same truck was found in Texas and someone set it on fire.
Lafayette's Police Chief Jim Craft says Lavergne's arrest wouldn't have been possible without the help of literally dozens of public agencies and private businesses.
Today State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson said though the arrest is the first step in solving this case it's a big one for the family
Lavergne's arrest came after a search yesterday at his trailer near Lawtell.
Agents with the Sheriff's office spent several hours at the trailer on a normally quiet road.
After the search there wrapped up Lavergne was arrested and charged.
One neighbor said he never expected anything like this so close to home.
