Rickey Bustle 1-on-1
The UL head football coach talks about his team heading into the '09 season
The UL football team doesn't officially snap the ball for just under five months but that doesn't mean head coach Rickey Bustle isn't scheming already.
The Cajuns wrapped up spring practice with their annual spring game two Saturdays ago. Heading into spring workouts the Cajuns had many questions that needed answers.
Who will step up and fill the holes left by a very accomplished senior class? Will the defense be able to stop anybody this year? Can UL continue to break records on offense? Who will take over for Brian Jenkins after he left to coach at Rutgers?
Almost all of the major questions Bustle wanted answers to, he got.
The 'whats' and 'whys' may have been solved. Bustle says a crew of underclassmen have stepped up as new leaders on this squad and UL hired Justin Lustig* to replace the aforementioned Jenkins.
But the 'whos' may still need addressing. Undrea Sails seems to have worked his way into the starting role at running back, replacing Tyrell Fenroy. Coaches seem happy with a wideout-by-committee approach to make up ground left behind by Jason Chery.
But what about QB?
Bustle still hasn't made that decision and says he isn't close either. The top two candidates for the gig seem to be sophomores Chris Masson and Brad McGuire.
Bustle addressed those issues and more when I caught up with him in his office. To hear the full interview, click above.
