Sen. Cornyn supports CSPAN covering health care

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and longtime advocate of open government, today issued the following statement challenging fellow open government advocates to support a recent request by CSPAN for Congressional Leadership to permit the outlet to cover further meetings and negotiations related to the health care bills passed by the House and Senate.

“I challenge all fellow open government advocates, including President Obama who promised that transparency would be a ‘touchstone’ of his administration, to join me in supporting CSPAN’s request to cover further meetings related to the Senate and House health care bills. My Republican colleagues and the American people have been largely shut out of the health care reform proceedings thus far, as Democrat Leaders packaged their health care bills behind closed doors and layered them with billions of dollars in sweetheart deals to woo undecided Democrats.

“If the past few months are any indication, I am concerned this veil of secrecy will remain as the final version of a historic health care overhaul is created. I encourage all open government advocates to join me in putting the pressure on Democrat Leaders to honor CSPAN’s request, so these final proceedings will be transparent to the American people and to future generations.”
