2 arrested following deadly weekend brawl
SHREVEPORT, LA — Authorities are investigating a weekend fight in downtown Shreveport that has left a local man dead.
At approximately 2:11 a.m. on September 9, 2012, Shreveport Police patrol officers were flagged down in the 500 block of Commerce Street relative to an unconscious man lying near the Texas Street Bridge. Upon arrival there, officers found 20 year old Robert Farmer suffering from trauma to the face and head.
It was learned that while involved in a fight with multiple participants, Farmer was struck in the face causing him to fall to the ground striking his head on the pavement. Farmer was subsequently transported to LSUHSC by the Shreveport Fire Department with what was described as potentially life-threatening injuries.
Based on information gathered at the scene, authorities arrested 27 year old Darrell Phillips of the 3400 block of Desoto Street in Shreveport, along with 23 year old Demerius Smith of the 2300 block of Mrytle Street in Alexandria, Louisiana, charging both men with second degree battery.
On September 13, 2012, Farmer died at LSUHSC. As the investigation continues, detectives will be working with officials from the Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office to determine what charges the suspects could face in light of the victim's death.
