July 4, 2014 — July fourth weekend in Acadiana could mean barbecues, a day off from work and fireworks! To celebrate independance day, fireworks displays have turned into one of the most popular U.S. traditions. The firworks stands and tents are up all around the area selling the latest fireworks. But with that comes word from the Lafayette fire department to please be careful, using common sense, good judgement and always supervise the children around fireworks....We don't want to start any fires or create any injuries.
"Make sure that if you set off fireworks, that it's done in the most safest way. Point the fireworks in a safe direction and particularly not at any house or any tall grass where something could easily ignite. The other part is make sure the firework is on the ground, safely and securely on the ground." said LFD Spokesperson Aldon Trahan.
"Use the equipment that is designed, which is a punk to set off a firework. That way you have distance because our other concern is injuries. This time of year we have injuries where individuals setting off fireworks, particularly children, and you want to make sure they have distance when they are setting it off."
Remember, it is illegal to set off fireworks within the city limits of Lafayette...But other towns and cities in the Acadiana area have their own rules that you should follow. If there is a fire, call 911 as quickly as possible so the fire department can respond and have a safe 4th of July weekend.
