An 8-year-old child from New Iberia is recovering in a Baton Rouge hospital this morning after he was shot and deputies are currently seeking the man they believe to be responsible.

The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident occurred in the evening on Monday, Feb. 18. Deputies were called to a home on the 600 block of Robertson Street. When they arrived they found the child suffering from a gun shot wound. Witnesses told deputies that the shooting was accidental.

The child was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. He was later transported to a hospital in Baton Rouge for continued treatment.

Detectives later learned that the man who shot the child, Akeam Daniels, 21, fled the home before deputies arrived.

They are currently searching for him and have issued a warrant for his arrest. Officials say Daniels is the child’s brother.

“Through further investigation we believe there was some intent for him to fire the weapon,” Cpt. Ryan Turner, Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. “Whether he intended to strike the child we do not know. That’s the reason for having the charges.”

Daniels is wanted for Second-Degree Battery, Illegal Discharge of a Weapon, and Simple Criminal Damage to Property over $500.

If you know anything regarding the whereabouts of Akeam Daniels, call the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office at (337) 369-3711.

*NOTE: The original information released by the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office stated that the child was 6-years-old. They also noted that Daniels was the boyfriend of the child's mother. They corrected that information and it was changed in this article.
