On Sunday, September 8, 2013, at approximately 2:34 p.m., Angola correctional officers working the front gate of the Louisiana State Penitentiary reported a suspicious vehicle approaching and retreating multiple times. Front gate officers attempted to stop the vehicle by firing shots. Louisiana State Police investigative staff were on hand since the initial report and pursued the vehicle until 2:57 p.m. when the chase stopped as the result of a head on collision atop the levee circulating the massive grounds.

No injuries were reported as a result of the shooting and no life threatening injuries as a result of the crash. It was discovered that the suspect Floyd Tillman, had with him in his vehicle two small children. Warden Cain was in constant contact with Secretary James M. LeBlanc, who was in touch with state police and probation and parole. The West Feliciana Sheriff’s Office has been called to the scene and is taking custody of Tillman.

Warden Burl Cain states that, “all is secure at the prison at this time as the incident is chiefly occurred at the prison’s perimeter. Investigations into the reasons why Tillman chose to come to the prison today are on-going.”

Further information will be released as it becomes available.
