THIBODAUX, LA (NBC33) — An attempted murder suspect was arrested after his car broke down, leaving him stranded in the roadway during rush hour traffic.
The Thibodaux Police Department reports that an officer pulled over to assist the motorist on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at roughly 5:30 p.m. As a part of protocol, the officer asked the driver for identification, however, he said he did not have any.
“It’s routine to check the identity of the person you’re dealing with anytime an officer steps out of his vehicle,” David Melancon, Thibodaux Police Department, explained. “There are a number of reasons why we do this.”
When the driver could not provide identification, the officer asked him questions related to his identity. The veteran officer became suspicious based on the information he provided.
“When people have warrants, they will give you partially correct information, but some of it will be wrong,” Melancon noted. “For example, they’ll give you the right day and month of their birthday, but the wrong year. Or they’ll give you the right numbers for their street address, but the wrong street name.”
In this case, the officer’s suspicions were correct.
The officer asked for vehicle registration information, and when the driver opened his glove box, there was a handgun located inside. The driver attempted to conceal the handgun, which was later discovered to be unregistered. The driver said he did not know who the gun belonged to.
At this point the officer questioned the driver further and the man finally provided his true identity, Charles Edward Mitchell III, 20. After running his name through headquarters, he learned that the stranded motorist was actually a wanted man.
Along with having a suspended license, Mitchell had warrants out for his arrest from Terrebonne for two counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder, Simple Criminal Damage to Property, four counts of Aggravated Criminal Damage to property, Possession or Dealing in Unregistered of Illegally Transferred Weapons, and Resisting an Officer. He was also charged with Operating Vehicle while License is Suspended and Illegal Window Tint.
