Investigators believe a 38-year-old man shot and killed his father, then turned the gun on himself.

The investigation began on Sunday, Sept. 15 shortly after midnight. When deputies with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office arrived at the home located in the 100 block of Nanoke Street near Carencro, they found two victims.

Officials say the father, Harold Pope, 61, was still alive when they arrived, but he died while being transported to the hospital.

The second victim, Jeremy Pope, was suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to the head. His body was located in the front yard of the home.

Investigators have determined that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. Although the case will remain open until an autopsy has been completed, deputies are not actively seeking any additional suspects in this case.

We’re told the two men had been involved in an ongoing argument prior to the shooting.
