A 28-year-old woman remains in critical condition after her husband allegedly attacked her, killing the unborn child she was carrying.

Officials with the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office tell NBC33 News that the victim is in stable, but critical condition. We're told she was first placed in stable condition when she arrived at the hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

The incident happened at roughly 11:00 a.m. at a home located on Milton Road in Walker. Reports say that Jeffery Reynolds attacked his wife, who was roughly 7 months pregnant, with a kitchen knife and cut her across her throat and abdomen. He then removed the unborn child, which was found with a large laceration on the top of the skull. We’re told officers arrived on the scene and found Reynolds kneeling over the victim.

An autopsy on the fetus is being performed today. Officials say it could be several days before the results are released.

Reynolds was arrested and charged with First-Degree Feticide and Second-Degree Attempted Murder. He is currently being held in the Livingston Parish Detention Center on a bond of $500,000.

Officials could not say whether the couple have any other children.
