Still planning on opening new facility next November
Lafayette, LA (KADN) — New Lafayette jail construction is under way with a facility holding inmates, housing, and a training center. This new facility is a function of the parish growing. When the current jail was originally built it was to hold 338 inmates. Presently, the jail has about 900 inmates with an overall capacity of 954. This new site provides flexibility for the future and growth of parish population. Construction started in February and has come a long way, but has been slower recently because of the weather.
"Well obviously, you know, it's a little slower because of all the rain right now, but it's been going pretty well. Their right on time so it's..we're looking to potentially open next November," says Robert Reardon, Director of Corrections for Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department.
The location of this new facility is 110 N Pat Street off of West Willow Street. This place proved most beneficial to build because it is close to downtown, on a main thorough fair, and met all the physical requirements for size. Reardon expects completion to be the end of next year as long as weather does not detain progress.
