Cyclist struck by a vehicle on LSU’s campus
BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A man riding a bicycle was struck by a car near Patrick Taylor Hall (College of Engineering) at around noon today. EMS reports that he was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The LSU Police Department says this sort of incident is not common on campus; however, several people are injured every year.
“We do stress to the entire LSU community that people need to understand that bicycles are considered a vehicle as far as traffic laws are concerned in the state of Louisiana,” Cpt. Cory Lalonde, LSU Police Department, said. “They need to obey all traffic signs and signals just like a vehicle would and on the flipside we do need for drivers to pay particular attention for bicyclists and pedestrians when they are approaching intersections.
“One of the things we emphasize when we do safety talks is that if everybody uses a little more common sense and a little more attention when they are driving, walking, or riding a bicycle, we could significantly reduce the number of incidents that we do have. A lot of the crashes we have could be avoided if everyone paid a little more attention.”
This case is still under investigation and the LSU Police Department could not say whether a citation was issued.
