CONVENT, LA — Emergency responders were called to the scene of a dome collapse at the Nucor Steel Louisiana in St. James Parish, but thankfully no one was injured.
The St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
Parish President Tim Roussel said that no toxic chemicals were released due to the collapse. However, there is extensive damage due to what appears to be a "structure failure."
The Nucor Steel Louisiana facility is in the final phase of construction and is not currently in production. Once completed, the new facility will utilize direct reduction technology to convert natural gas and iron ore pellets into high quality direct reduced iron.
