GONZALES, LA — Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a multiple vehicle fatal crash in Ascension Parish on Monday, Aug. 27. The crash occurred on LA 30 north of Interstate 10 at the intersection with Robert Wilson Road shortly after 5:00 p.m.
Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 1988 Ford pickup was traveling west on Robert Wilson Road when it failed to stop at the intersection with LA 30. The pickup traveled into the oncoming path of a 2005 Dodge Durango, which was traveling north on LA 30. The Durango, being driven by Talana Walker-Collins, 32, of Gonzales, struck the driver’s side door of the pickup. The Ford pickup, driven by Randy Craig, 56, of Port Allen, was then struck by a southbound 2012 Toyota pickup, which was being driven by Grady Thigpin, 26, of St. Amant. The Ford came to rest on its driver’s side in the roadway.
The driver of the Ford and Walker-Collins were both transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital due to injuries sustained in the crash. The Ford driver, Craig, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by doctors at the hospital. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Thigpin was uninjured in the crash. Walker-Collins had two minor children in the vehicle with her at the time of the crash. Both were properly restrained and suffered only minor injuries.
Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash. However, Troopers have submitted blood samples of Walker-Collins and the Ford driver to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Thigpin voluntarily submitted a breath sample to Troopers that showed no detectable alcohol in his system. The crash remains under investigation.
With increased traffic due to the approaching hurricane, Troopers strongly urge motorists to stay off the roadways if possible. If it is necessary to drive, motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and patience. Traffic volume is expected to increase over the next twenty-four hours, and Troopers are encouraging people to make the decision to travel as early as possible.
