EBRSO arrests man who tossed dog over CAAWS fence
BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — After a massive outpour from social media, an anonymous caller identified the man seen tossing a dog over the fence of a local animal rescue shelter. Today, he’s locked up in parish prison for one count of cruelty to animals as well as outstanding traffic warrants.
On Tuesday, Aug. 7, images and a video clip showing a man tossing a dog over a fence began circulating social media. The images were taken over the weekend from a surveillance camera located at the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS). The non-profit organization posted the images with the hope of identifying the individual.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office reports that they received a tip from an anonymous caller regarding the identity of the individual. The caller had seen the image on the news.
The Sheriff’s Office had not gotten an official complaint prior to the caller’s tip. Acting on the information, deputies located and arrested Richard Hawn, 38, of Baton Rouge for one count of cruelty to animals as well as outstanding traffic warrants.
The dog, who has been named “Jimmy,” CAAWS reports that the pup is in good health.
“Thank you so much to everyone for your support! Jimmy will be going to the vet tomorrow and should be available for adoption this Saturday,” a CAAWS representative posted to Facebook. “Please remember to always treat animals with care and affection and not like they are trash, they deserve better than that. Adopt a pet, you do save a life.”
