Detectives are working to identify a scam artist who is accused of taking people for money upwards of $8,000.

The St. Landry Sheriff’s Office reports that the accused “pigeon drop” scammer has persuaded at least one person of cash, and they believe their may be other victims out there.

“The pigeon drop scam is one of the oldest and most successful scams in history,” a representative from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. “It’s a trick in which a victim is persuaded to give up a sum of money in order to secure the rights to a larger sum of money. The scammers make off with the money and the victim is left with nothing.”

Detectives believe the con man is an elderly black male working in the Opelousas area. If you recognize the man in the picture or his vehicle, call Crime Stoppers at (337) 948-TIPS (8477).
