Eunice man dies after Iberia Parish crash
New Iberia, LA (KADN) — Darrel Toepfer, 54, from Eunice, LA, died at 1:20 Friday morning at a Lafayette hospital from injuries he sustained in a crash in New Iberia on Thursday, July 3, 2014.
Iberia Parish Sheriff Louis Ackal says Toepfer was riding a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle around 7:30 AM on Thursday morning on Center Street in New Iberia. Investigators believe, Betty Walker, 62, drove her 2007 Ford Taurus in front of Toepfer's motorcycle when she was trying to turn into a driveway.
According to investigators, Toepfer crashed his motorcycle into Walker's car. Iberia Parish Deputies say Toepfer was wearing a helmet, but it wasn't certified by the Department of Transportation. As a result, he sustained serious head injuries. Toepfer was sent to a Lafayette hospital in critical condition as a result of the crash.
Investigators say Walker was not injured. She was wearing a seatbelt, and she was issued a ticket for Failure to Yield. The Traffic Division of the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation.
