Fire destroys century-old church in Bogalusa, LA

Tuesday, December 18, 2012 - 6:00am

A century old church located in Bogalusa went up in flames over the weekend. The three-alarm blaze completely destroyed the building.

The Bethlehem Baptist Church located on East 7th Street caught fire at about 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16. The church, which was founded 102 years ago, is the oldest African American church in the city.

“It’s devastating,” Glennis McKephin, parishioner, told WDSU. “We’re all still in a state of shock, because it’s one of the oldest black churches here in the community. With the purpose it has served, it’s just hard to see all the history and where it’s come from.”

The congregation consists of roughly 250 people.

Officials say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
