A man is locked up today for allegedly taking thousands of dollars from an elderly woman when he was supposed to be helping her with yard work.

The Eunice Police Department reports that Toby Fontenot, 26, was hired by a 78-year-old woman to help her with the outdoor chores. At some point he asked to use her restroom. After several minutes the woman went inside to check on Fontenot and found him in her bedroom.

The victim told officers that Fontenot returned to work after she questioned him about being in her bedroom. She says Fontenot then told her he was going to the store to purchase a pack of cigarettes. However, he never returned.

The victim went back to her bedroom and realized that a ring worth $25,000 was missing, along with $40,000 in cash.

Fontenot was recently located in Church Point, La and agreed to return to Eunice for questioning. At some point during the transport an officer told Fontenot that he was being placed under arrest. The officer claims Fontenot struck him and then attempted to escape from the unmarked police unit. He was quickly apprehended.

Fontenot was arrested and charged with Battery on an Officer, Resisting an Officer with Violence, Simple Escape, and Felony Theft ($65,000).
