Independence Mayor charged for incident involving police officer

Independence Mayor Michael Ragusa has been released from jail after turning himself in on public intimidation and other counts involving an incident with an Independence police officer.

Police Chief Frank Edwards confirmed that Mayor Michael Ragusa had turned himself over to Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's authorities yesterday. The charges include Public Intimidation (a felony), Battery of a Police Officer, and Resisting Arrest.

All of the charges stem from an altercation that happened last August with Independence police officer Jeannie Cruz.

Cruz filed her complaint against the Mayor after she says he interfered in a traffic stop involving the Mayor's son. The officer claims Ragusa used profanities as he slammed the door of her police unit. She says she had to physically kick the door open to get out.

Ragusa did not want to talk about the charges last night.

The mayor has been released on his own recognizance.
