BATON ROUGE, LA — Judge Tim Kelley ruled today that Governor Jindal’s school voucher program cannot continue. The ruling came this morning after hearing testimony over the past two days and closing arguments.
Judge Kelley heard arguments from both those for and against the program. Those for it say it’s a great opportunity for kids in low performing schools to get the education they need to succeed. But those against the program say it takes money away from public schools and pushes it to private schools, and that’s unconstitutional.
As it stands, students who are in a public school rated C, D, or F under the state accountability system and who meet income rules can apply for state aid to move to a different school. However, Judge Kelley ruled that the program has to end.
