BATON ROUGE (KADN) — Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell sent out a public warning of a new email scam that tells recipients that they need to appear in court for “illegal software usage.”
The email contains an attachment that may contain a virus.
The fraudulent email has a subject line: “Notice of Appearance in Court” and claims to be sent from the “court clerk.”
Apparently, the emails use the domain name of various law firms; however, these firms maintain that the emails were not sent from them.
The Attorney General’s offices said it has received several calls and emails from the public about the fake messages.
Sanettria Pleasant, head of the Attorney General’s Public Protection Division, advices people to, “Ignore and delete these emails. They are not official court notices and recipients do not need to appear in court.”
