Lafayette officer honored as Officer of the Year for busting counterfeit check ring

A Lafayette Police Officer was recognized yesterday for his hard work on a check counterfeiting case.

The St. Edmund’s Knights of Columbus awarded Detective Todd Borel on Thursday, April 18. The case for which he was credited happened in 2012.

Borel, an 11 year veteran of the Police Department, was instrumental in the arrest of three suspects. They reportedly used counterfeit checks all along the Gulf Coast. The suspects had roughly $155,000 in stolen checks, $2,500 in assets and $1600 in cash at the time they were apprehended.
