Lafayette police investigate fatal car accident

UPDATE - Traffic investigators have arrested the driver of the white Ford Crown Victoria in yesterday’s fatal crash. Phillip Benoit (31) of Lafayette was arrested and charged with Careless Operation, Operating an Unsafe Vehicle, OWI, Child Endangerment, and Vehicular Homicide. The deceased is only being identified by investigators as a 12 year old male of Lafayette. The investigation remains ongoing.


ORIGINAL: On March 28, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Lafayette Police responded to the 3200 block of Moss Street regarding a major crash involving 3 vehicles.

According to investigators, a white Ford Crown Victoria was traveling north on Moss Street when for unknown reasons the vehicle lost control and swerved towards the southbound lanes. The Ford then struck a blue Honda and a Gold Mercury Marquis. The driver of the Mercury and the driver and passenger inside of the Honda were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries. The driver and two passengers inside of the Ford were transported to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries. A fourth male passenger inside of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are attempting to identify the deceased. The crash remains under investigation.
