Lafayette Sheriff investigating death of female inmate
LAFAYETTE, LA — Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a parish inmate at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. Deputies assigned to the facility discovered the inmate during a wellness check hanging in her cell around 2:48 p.m. Thursday. Resuscitation efforts by LPSO staff members and responding paramedics were unsuccessful.
Lelia Shelvin, 51, from Lafayette was pronounced dead by the Parish Coroner at LPCC. Shelvin was being held after an arrest at approximately 1:16 a.m. on Aug. 9, 2012 for an outstanding warrant for Aggravated Battery with a Dangerous Weapon by the Lafayette Police Department.
The matter is being investigated by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Unit and the Criminal Investigation Department.
