UPDATE: Jockey Lot murder suspect to be tried as adult
Lafayette (KADN) — UPDATE Feb. 6, 2014: The 15-year-old suspect, Earl Joseph III, will be tried as an adult for the murder of 49-year-old Michael Patin on Sunday, Feb. 2.
Joseph has been moved from the Lafayette Detention Center to the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. He will be housed in an area separate from general population.
UPDATE Feb. 2, 2014: Deputies have arrested a 15-year-old suspect for the murder of 49-year-old Michael Patin.
Further investigation revealed that five other juveniles, ranging in age from 12-16, were also charged with criminal trespassing, unauthorized use of a movable and illegal possession of stolen things.
None of these five juveniles are considered to be directly involved in Patin's murder.
When police initially received the call, a witness told them that the five juveniles were trying to break into the property and later tried to escape in the car they came in. However, they crashed, the crashed the car and had to runaway on foot.
ORIGINAL: The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a murder that took place around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday night at the Jockey Lot on NW Evangeline Thruway.
When officer arrived at the scene, they discovered 49-year-old Michael Patin, of Arnaudville with one gunshot wound in his back. Patin was an employee at the Jockey Lot.
Witnesses say that Patin was shot during a car jacking.
According to police reports, Patin was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Deputies have several suspects in custody, but because of the ages of those involved, no additional information can be released at this point.
Detectives are still gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses. The case is still under investigation.
