On Monday, Jan. 7, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash on LA Highway 85 north of Dozie Guillotte Road which claimed the life of a Lydia man.

At roughly 6:15 a.m., Loretta Broussard, 44, of Jeanerette, was driving a 2007 Mazda passenger car south on LA Highway 85. James Nguyen, 58, from Lydia, was attempting to cross LA Highway 85 when he was struck by Broussard’s vehicle. Troopers indicated that Nguyen was wearing dark clothing and was not crossing at an intersection or crosswalk when he was struck. Nguyen was pronounced dead at the scene. Broussard was not injured.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash; however, toxicology samples have been obtained and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers remind pedestrians that State Law requires they walk on sidewalks when provided, and if no sidewalk is provided they must walk against the flow of traffic on the left side of the road. Troopers urge pedestrians to wear light colored clothing when walking on the road.
