Pioneering Lafayette businesswoman Irma Belle Abdalla passed away this afternoon
Mrs. Abdalla was a pioneering businesswoman and icon in the Acadiana area
Lafayette, La. (KADN) — Irma Belle Poche Abdalla passed away in her home today among family and friends at the tender age of 100 years old. Mrs. Abdalla would have been 101 in November. Born in Gold Dust, Louisiana on Thanksgiving Day in 1913 she was raised in Arnaudville and moved to Lafayette at the time of her marriage to the late Edward Abdalla III.
A sharp businesswoman and pioneering figure among businesswoman in Acadiana with a keen sense of style, she and her husband ran the downtown Abdalla's department store for over 60 years. She always supported our community and stressed the need for everyone to be involved in the welfare of others in the community.
In her later years, after retiring she became an avid cook and was always feeding someone. Mrs. Abdalla will be remembered for her sharp wit, exceptional business acumen, her giving and loving nature, and her ability to make friends with all who came in contact with her. Lafayette has truly lost one of it's most extraordinary and noteworthy figures.
Wake and funeral services will be held at Delhomme Funeral Home on 1011 Bertrand Drive. The wake will be tomorrow, Friday June 6th, from 3pm to 8pm and Saturday June 7th from 9am to 11am. Funeral services will begin at shortly after 11am.
