A house fire has taken the life of a retired firefighter.

The State Fire Marshal’s said in a press release that a body, believed to be retired firefighter George D. Shilling, was recovered from a house fire in Independence.

A passing motorist reported the fire, in the 15000 block of Toney Road, around 6 a.m. on February 4.

Firefighters arrived to find the house “completely engulfed in flames.”

Shilling’s family members arrived shortly after. They told fire officials Shilling was most likely still inside the house, because his vehicle was parked outside.

An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be asphyxia due to smoke inhalation, according to the State Fire Marshal’s office.

George D. Shilling was a 79-year-old, retired Kenner firefighter.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are still investigating the case to determine the cause of the fire.
