THIBODAUX, LA — Five juveniles are behind bars after they allegedly broke into a home several times while the victim was away on vacation.
“The homeowner first noticed something was wrong when he came home and his air conditioner was on,” David Melancon, Thibodaux Police Department, said. “He distinctly remembered turning it off before he left. So apparently, the teens were ‘chilling’ in the home.”
Once the home owner realized something was wrong, he started to notice several missing items.
“Detectives learned that the juveniles burglarized the home several times, because they knew the home owner was out of town; returning each time to take different items, one of which was a high powered rifle,” Melancon added. “The investigation is still ongoing, but most of the items taken have been recovered and returned to the owner.”
Recently, we spoke to Crime Stoppers about the increase of juvenile related crimes during the summer. Most of the crimes they commit are related to burglary or theft. Often they are what police call “crimes of opportunity,” which is what this case would be considered.
“During the summer a lot of people go out of town for long periods of time on vacation,” Cpt. Stone said. “Secure your valuables before you go out of town.”
Decreasing the number of opportunities to become a victim of a simple crime is the best deterrent. More importantly, catching an individual who has committed a crime is the best way to keep the entire community safe. For that reason, Cpt. Stone wants to make sure everyone takes advantage of the Crime Stoppers system.
“We’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” he said. “You can call or text us with any information you may have.”
