SCAM ALERT: Jury duty scam reported in 11 states
LOUISIANA — A jury duty scam is impacting people across the entire nation.
Victims will initially get a phone call from a person claiming to be a "jury duty coordinator."
The ‘coordinator’ tells the victim that they have skipped out on jury duty. When the victim says they didn't, the thief will ask for a social security number so they can "check their records."
Of course, once that happens, the victim's identity is stolen.
The scam has been reported in 11 states so far.
"It came as a surprise to me,” stated Judge Trudy White. “There is no instance in which we would be calling or management would be calling an individual who has been selected or identified to be a potential juror. (There’s) no reason for us to call and request a social security number."
White went on to say if you have any questions about jury duty to call the Clerk of Court.
