Search for dangerous escaped inmate causes high alert, confusion on NSU’s campus
NATCHITOCHES, LA — A university in Natchitoches is on high alert due to the nearby search for an escaped prison inmate who is considered “dangerous.”
The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the inmate, Derrick L. Evans, 29, escaped on Thursday, May 2 at roughly 5:00 p.m.
Nearby Northwestern State University sent a Purple Alert to students, faculty and staff this morning to be on the look out for anything suspicious. However, there seems to have been some confusion.
An “all clear” message was sent out, but officials say the alert is still active at this time.
“There is no ‘all clear’ for the current event,” a message reads on the university’s Facebook page. “University authorities are looking into why that message was sent.”
Evans is described as 5 feet - 11 inches tall, weighing 158 pounds, bald, with brown eyes and a medium complexion and tattoos on his left arm, right arm, and neck. He was last seen wearing blue denim jeans and a detention center light-blue shirt.
Evans is reportedly serving time for Attempted Manslaughter and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
If you see Evans, do not approach him, call the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office at (318) 352-6432, Natchitoches Police Department at (318) 352-8101 or your local law enforcement agency.
