Second offense DWI driver rips out bench bolted to the wall during booking
EUNICE, LA — A second offense DWI driver allegedly took police on a high speed chase through the streets of Eunice. As he was being booked for a handful of offense, he allegedly ripped a bench from the wall to which it was bolted.
The Eunice Police Department reports that the incident occurred on Thursday, Nov. 15 shortly before 2:00 a.m. We’re told an officer located on Hwy 190 clocked a black Toyota Tundra pick up truck traveling 62 mph in a 35 mph zone. The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect allegedly sped up to 80 mph while still within the city limits. The driver even turned off his lights while attempting to flee.
The pursuit finally ended at the suspect’s home on Suzie Drive. The suspect, Matthew Martel, 22, was said to be visibly intoxicated. He was taken into custody as soon as he exited the vehicle.
Officers conducted a search of his vehicle. They recovered suspected marijuana, a 22 caliber rifle, and a 30-06 rifle from the seat of the truck. They say both were fully loaded.
Martel was taken into custody and booked into the Eunice jail. While being processed he was asked to provide a breath sample, but he refused. Officials say he became irate. Although he was secured to a bench with handcuffs on his wrists and shackles on both ankles, he managed to rip the bench from the wall.
Martel was secured in a cell. Once he became calm they completed the booking process.
Martel was charged with Speeding, Improper Lane Usage, Reckless Operation, Driving Without Headlights, Criminal Damage to Property, Aggravated Flight From an Officer, Resisting an Officer with Force or Violence, DWI (second offense), Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of a Firearm in the Presence of CDS.
