Bill protecting salt domes in south Louisiana
LAFAYETTE, LA (KADN) — Senator Fred Mills will be heard in the Senate Natural Resources Committee tomorrow morning concerning the salt domes like in Lake Peigneur and Assumption Parish. The bill prohibits the issuance of certain permits to construct or operate salt dome canverns until certain conditions are met. According to the board of Save Lake Peigneur, Inc. if this bill is passed it would be a huge step toward protecting drinking water and the environment around the lake.
"What this bill addresses is the fact that we will protect these salt domes that have had injuries, and of course protecting them, protecting the environment, protecting the people around it," says Nara Crowley, president of the board members of Save Lake Peigneur, Inc.
If the bill is passed tomorrow it will be the first step before it goes to the House Natural Resources Environment Committee, then to the House and Senate floors. If the bill goes through, any action a company takes involving salt domes will have to be approved by legislation first.
