Sheriff: Arson was attempt to cover up murder of mother, two children

Fire investigators made a gruesome discovery this morning when they found the bodies of a mother and her two children inside an apartment complex. Investigators say the three were stabbed and have detained the woman’s husband as a possible suspect.

“It’s been about 40 years since we’ve had a homicide in the Town of Lockport,” Chief Vedros, Lockport Police Department, said.

The Lafouche Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the Lockport Fire Department was called on Sunday, Nov. 4 shortly before 8:00 a.m. to reports of a fire at an apartment on Elliot Drive.

Firefighters discovered the bodies of Jacqueline Gautreaux Nieves, 29, and her daughters Gabriella Nieves, 6, and Isabella Nieves, 1. All three were found with at least one stab wound and detectives say the fire was intentionally set to cover up the crime.

“It is a horrific crime any time children are involved, and it’s even more devastating when it’s a family,” said Sheriff Webre. “Then you have the attempt to cover up the crime with arson. Obviously, this is an extremely rare and unique case.”

Carlos Nieves, Jr., 32, husband to Jacqueline and father of the two children, was detained as a person of interest. He is currently being questioned by authorities. However, investigators say they have not yet determined whether there was a single perpetrator or multiple subjects.

The victims have been taken to the Jefferson Parish Forensic Center for a full autopsy scheduled for Monday.
