LAFAYETTE, LA — UPDATE: The Lafayette Police Department arrested Landon Broussard, 21, for the death of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old child. Investigators say the boy had injuries that were both fresh and healing, indicating prolonged abuse. He is charged with First-Degree Murder
Deputies also arrested the child’s mother, Laura Smith, 22. She is charged with Principle to First-Degree Murder.
ORIGINAL: At 10:22 this morning Lafayette Sheriff officials arrived at the 3700 block of Kaliste Saloom Road in response to a 911 call in reference to an unresponsive 3 year old child. CPR was performed on the child at the scene before he was transfered to a local hospital.
"I mean obviously it's always a terrible situation when you pull up on a death, and specifically the death of a child but I think officers responded properly. Fire fighters and medics all worked together to begin providing first responder aid," says Captain Kip Judice.
The boy later died at the hospital. He was in his step-father's care at the time of the incident. The mother's boyfriend notified his mother and she then called 911. Authorities suspect foul play, and a criminal investigation is underway.
Authorities are waiting to release the identity of the child until they contact the biological father.
