St. Charles Parish Deputy killed in crash while responding to emergency call
ST. CHARLES PARISH, LA — An on-duty deputy was killed in a car crash that happened while he was responding to an emergency call.
The Louisiana State Police reports that Deputy Jeff Watson, 41, of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office was responding to the call at roughly 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, August 4. He was going north on LA 52 with his lights activated and was struck by a vehicle as he approached Post Drive.
Officials say a vehicle being driven by Dallas Villon, 56, of Luling, was turning left when Deputy Watson approached. The two cars collided and forced the police vehicle to flip on its side. It then went into the on-coming lane of traffic where it was hit head-on by an 80-year-old man. Then, a motorcycle being driven by a 29-year-old man crashed into the back of that vehicle.
Deputy Watson was rushed to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. Veillon and the 80-year-old man were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the motorcycle was transported to the hospital with critical injuries.
"Deputy Watson is the first St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Deputy to die in the line of duty since 1982, and the fourth line of duty death in the department’s 200 year history," a press release from St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, said. "Deputy Watson was a dedicated public servant who will be deeply missed by all St. Charles Parish residents."
Investigating Troopers do not believe alcohol was a factor in this crash. However, a blood sample was taken from each individual involved in the crash.
Officials say Deputy Watson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was a 12-year veteran of law enforcement and joined the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office in October 2005. He previously worked for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. A resident of Destrehan, Louisiana, Deputy Watson is survived by his wife Lynsey and stepdaughter Abrial, and his coworkers with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
