St. Landry Parish - The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents today about reports of a scam that is seeking to gain access to credit card information which may result in Identification theft, gaining access to bank accounts and to open lines of credit.
St. Landry Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Captain Megan Vizena said, “There are widespread reports from residents who have received phone calls asking them to verify credit card numbers to either win a prize or to pay their delinquent electricity bill. The caller then asks to verify their personal information. We are warning people not to provide any personal banking information or personal information such as date of birth or social security number based on these types of phone calls. If you receive one of these calls, you should immediately hang up.”
“If you believe they may already be a victim of identity theft and have provided personal banking information or other personal information over the phone, we recommend that you call the St. Landry Sheriff’s Office at 337-948-6516 to file a formal complaint,” Vizena added.
