Teen offender ran out of sheriff’s office in handcuffs, gains additional charges

A 17-year-old attempted to run from deputies after they discovered he was in possession of marijuana that he planned to sell.

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident happened at roughly 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15. We’re told a deputy conducted a traffic stop in the 900 block of Ridge Road. The deputy allegedly found 20 grams of marijuana wrapped in 15 separate packages on the suspect, Donte Harris of Patterson, La.

The passenger of the vehicle, London West, 22, of Duson, allegedly attempted to swallow a bag of marijuana when deputies asked him to step out of the vehicle. They managed to prevent West from swallowing the drugs and he was subsequently arrested for Possession of one gram of marijuana as well as Obstruction of Justice.

Harris was arrested and taken to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office for booking. During that time Harris allegedly ran out of the building while still handcuffed. Officials say he was located within minutes of his escape.

Harris is currently booked in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for charges of Intent to Distribute Marijuana, Resisting an Officer, and Simple Escape. He also had two outstanding warrants from St. Mary Parish. Officials did not say what those charges included.
