Troopers recover 690 pounds of marijuana during traffic stop in St. Martin Parish

A Texas man is in jail and over 690 pounds of marijuana are off the streets following a traffic stop on Interstate 10 east of Breaux Bridge.

On Monday, August 12 at 5:30 a.m., Troopers with Troop I stopped a 2012 Dodge van traveling east on Interstate 10 for a traffic violation. During the course of the stop Troopers obtained permission to search the vehicle and subsequently recovered 691.6 pounds of marijuana.

The driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, Pedro Matamoros, 38, of Brownsville, TX, was placed under arrest for improper lane use and possession with the intent to distribute marijuana. He was booked into the St. Martin Parish Jail.

During the initial investigation, it was learned that the marijuana was destined for a location in Louisiana. The narcotics had an estimated street value of over $1,000,000.00.

This case remains under investigation.
