A Lafayette teen was arrested after he allegedly stole a telephone, then called 911 when the victim tried to confront him.

The Lafayette Police Department responded to a call on Feb. 8 after a caller claimed to have seen a man with a gun on the campus of N.P. Moss Annex. The school was placed on lockdown for an hour while officers searched for the suspect.

After further investigation detectives learned that the student who reported the incident was not a victim, rather, he was the suspect.

Officials say the 15-year-old stole a cell phone and the victim entered the campus to try and locate him.

“He saw the guy looking for him and he told one of the staff members that he had a gun,” Cpl. Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police Department, explained.

An alert was issued with the suspect’s description. However, detectives later learned that the man never had a gun, and that he was the actual victim in the case.

The student was arrested and charged with Simple Robbery and Terrorizing. He was booked into the Lafayette Juvenile Detention Center.
