WANTED: Opelousas man accused of attempted murder of man, accidental shooting of woman

A man is wanted for attempted murder after he allegedly shot a man and woman over the weekend.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the shooting happened shortly before 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug 31 near the intersection of Blanchard and Academy Street in Opelousas. Officials say a 30-year-old male and a 34-year-old female were driven to the hospital after they were shot. The man was shot in the chest and the woman was shot near her collarbone.

Investigators learned that the male was the intended target and the female was struck by a stray bullet. They believe the suspect, Kendol Payne, 22, is responsible for the shooting.

Payne is wanted for one count of Attempted First-Degree Murder and one count of Attempted Second-Degree Murder. Officials say he should be considered armed and dangerous.
