Lions Conquer Heat; Newcomers Adjust In First Practice Of Fall Camp

Friday, August 3, 2012 - 3:00pm

Southeastern Louisiana University football coach Ron Roberts welcomed 95 players on Wednesday as the Lions officially held their first workout of fall camp on a hot, humid day on the Southeastern Practice Fields.

With the temperatures in the upper 90’s coupled with a heat index of 112 degrees at the beginning of the late afternoon session, the Lions moved their workout from Strawberry Stadium and showed no ill effects of the switch. Much of the work focused on getting over 30 newcomers adjusted to the speed of practice while continuing to build off a solid spring that saw the implementation of a new offensive and defensive scheme.

“Hats off to our players, they did a great job of conditioning and staying on top of things and right now we’re farther ahead of where we finished in the spring,” Roberts said. “I thought it was a great first day. I thought our younger guys adjusted well to the speed of practice and how we do things. It was real encouraging.”

On defense, Southeastern will employ a new look as it moves from the 4-3 to the 3-3-5 set. One of the areas Roberts to see improvement is on the defensive line where starters Tramaine Lucas and Justin Church return and are joined by senior Mairo Stovall. Junior college transfers Greg Triay, Ivan Abarenov and Jeremy Williams are also expected to make an immediate impact in their first season with the Lions.

“We do a lot of movement and it will give someone the ability to play at a higher level,” Roberts said of his defense. “Our first three up there looked pretty good. They’ve done a great job and have taking coaching very well and I’m excited where they’re at.”

Southeastern returns to practice on Thursday at 4:50 p.m. The Lions will don pads for the first time on Friday before putting on full gear for the first time on Sunday. All practices are open to the public.
