NEW ORLEANS (WDSU) — Police say a 50-year-old woman is dead after being rolled over by a float. It happened during the Nyx parade near Magazine and Cadiz St.
Officials say float #20 was the final float of the parade. Floats that were behind the incident location have not been allowed to continue and was escorted by police to the Morial Convention Center. Non-float elements of the parade were allowed to detour around the scene and continue on the parade route.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of the death and release the victim’s name once the autopsy is complete and the family is notified.
Julie Lea, Nyx Captain released a statement saying “On such a joyous night, this is obviously a tragic occurence. The parade takes a backseat when something like this happens on the route. On behalf of the entire Krewe of Nyx, along with the city of New Orleans we offer our most sincere condolences to the family an friends of the individual involved.”
