A Breaux Bridge man is being charged with arson in a fire set to the home of a woman found dead Saturday evening near Port Barre.
Brandon Boutte, 25, was booked into the St. Martin Parish Jail Saturday on one count of simple arson.
St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies initially identified the body of the woman found wrapped in a bloody sheet near a levee as Simone Robin, 19, of Catahoula. According to sheriff’s office reports, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were investigating an ATV accident along Spillway Road in Port Barre when they discovered Robin’s body.
According to the State Fire Marshal’s office, the Catahoula Fire Department asked for help investigating a fire at Robin’s home in the 1100 block of Bayou Mercier Road. Investigators discovered several points of origin along with a large plastic gas can in a bedroom closet, leading them to believe it was deliberately set.
When St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s deputies interviewed Boutte in relation to another case later that evening, he admitted to setting the structure on fire.
Boutte was then placed under arrest.
At this time, there is no report of a connection between Boutte and Robin’s death.
A SMPSO spokesman confirmed that they have an active investigation into Robin’s death. A statement is expected either later tonight or tomorrow.
